Types Of Lawn Weeds

Weeds are the unwanted plant growth in your lawn. The growing weeds compete with grasses for sunlight, space and soil. There are some therapeutic benefits that a weed offers but some times they indicate a bigger problem. It may need an instant remedy but you must have knowledge about weeds to address and cure the problem. It is the responsibility of the lawn owner to take care of plants and the look of the lawn. The owner can adopt some traditional as well as innovative measures to keep the lawn in its best. It is a challenge for him to identify the lawn weeds and cure the problem. For this purpose, he must be aware of types of lawn weeds.

Many types of lawn weeds can attack the lawn and destroy its beauty. If you have a healthy turf grass weeds cannot penetrate easily. However, if the grass is uneven and weak, weeds can germinate and compete with the lawn grass. Some types of lawn weeds that you will usually encounter are broadleaf, grass like, sedges and moss etc. Broadleaf weeds, as their name denotes, have broad green leafs and are thus identified easily. The most common broadleaf weeds are clovers, dandelions and plantains. These weeds are found in isolated clumps that should be removed physically. Make sure that the weeds are pulled from base eliminating the chance of growing the weed again.

Grass-like weeds are difficult to identify, as they resemble to the lawn grasses. Some common grass-like lawn weeds include bentgrass, quackgrass and crabgrass. Crabgrass is a summer annual grass. To avoid its growth do not fertilize your lawn in summer. Bermuda grass is considered a grass-like weed in some areas while in some other places it is grown as lawn grass. Sedges also resemble to grass and grass like weeds. Sedges have triangular stems and leaves grown vertically in row of three. You can distinguish between grasses and sedges by inspecting them closely. Moss is another weed. Its natural habitat is moist, shady and low fertility soils. It grows rapidly in moist places. Club moss is the type of mosses that have a single stem with green leaves on upper part of the stem and brown leaves on base. It can be identified easily.

Types Of Lawn Weeds

Some types of weeds are associated with weather. During early spring some weeds like chickweed, henbit and speedwell sprout up. These weeds are known as spring annuals. Do not fertilize the lawn during cool months, cut the thin stems of grass and rake in summer. It will help reducing the weed growth. Ground ivy, violets and clover are spring perennials. It is better to rake out the stems as early as possible. When lawn grass weakens by summer heat, summer perennial weeds start spreading. Remove the roots to prevent them from spreading.
