The nut grass or nutsedge weed is the widely distributed perennial sedge having small edible nutlike tubers. It is a marshy plant and has narrow grass like leaves and sharp pointed tip to that of inconspicuous flower. The root system of this grass lays dormant after appearing to be wiped out of the surface. This is the reason which resists its permanent removal and regaining growth. In addition, with the availability of nutlets, though in dormant state helps the weed to gain the space in future or even after repetitive eradication. Clearly to manifest the overall prevention in the growth of the weed, its whole system needs to be destroyed which is certainly not a one step mechanism.
There are many methods which can check the growth of the nutsedge weed. The most effective and result oriented include plowing the land properly and cultivating it with another grass or so. However, this requires regular monitoring since periodical lapses can again initiate the onset of the revival of nut grass. The most widely used method is pulling the weed mechanically from the land surface. Here, the weeds are pulled out with force or some tools. However, this method ensures only temporary removal of the nut grass and still the roots lay dormant and capable to regain the surface in a short time.
One common method applied for the eradication of the nutsedge weed is through repressing its growth. In this method, the surface pone to appearance of such weeds periodically is covered with a sheet of plastic or some metal. This slows down the rate of growth of nut grass but still the roots are intact beneath the surface. In some cases, the roots might penetrate through the sheet of the cardboard in some time and initiate growth. And if, this does not happen, the roots might go deep inside the ground and maintain a strong hold. The most effective treatment is that of employing of chemical solutions to permanently wipe out the weeds from growing. For this purpose, the effected land is sprayed with dilute herbicide solution. However, before applying the solution one should have details regarding using it and side effects. The possibility that it may destroy some valuable plants along with the nut grass cannot be ignored. The other chemical based solution is that of spraying of strong herbicide solution. This method is more intense and guarantees the removal of the nut grass weed more effectively than any other method. |
